What We Do

Our Mission

Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes Association (SECOLA), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, exists to protect, preserve, and enhance the waters, lands, and natural beauty of the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes in Florence County, Wisconsin. Through education, community engagement, and active stewardship, SECOLA is dedicated to ensuring the long-term health and enjoyment of these beautiful lakes for current residents, future generations, and all who cherish this unique and treasured resource.

Our History

The origins of the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes Association (SECOLA) trace back to 1928, when it was first formed as the Spread Eagle–Lake Ellwood Association. Early members recognized the need to protect the unique beauty and recreational value of the lakes, which have long been a gathering place—first for Native American communities, and later for settlers in the early 1880s.

Over the decades, the organization evolved in name and scope, becoming the Spread Eagle Lake Ellwood Taxpayers Association in the 1940s, and later the Spread Eagle Lakes Area Association in 1979. In 1986, it was officially incorporated as the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes Association, Inc.

Today, SECOLA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that balances community traditions—like the beloved Fourth of July fireworks—with its primary mission of lake preservation, environmental stewardship, and education to ensure the long-term health and enjoyment of the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes.
